Starting on the 21st of October, the Community Theatre Mariaberg will stage a complete run of the play “GEWEENTES/ HABITS” at the Kumulus Theatre. Portions of this performance were previously showcased during the ‘BTM in the neighbourhood’ event in June and July.
In the communities where BTM aims to establish itself, the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns had a significant impact. Many local residents expressed scepticism and disagreement regarding what was referred to as the ‘new normal.’ However, it was not just the COVID-19 measures that created divisions; various social issues also became sources of tension, anger, and occasionally, unapologetic confrontation, especially on social media. It was during this period, colloquially known as the ‘corona times,’ that we delved into what the members of Neighbourhood Theatre Mariaberg genuinely considered ‘normal.’ We engaged in conversations about daily routines, rituals, as well as matters related to faith, life, and death.
These discussions often led to moments of recognition and laughter, but at times, they also evoked unspoken mutual astonishment or disagreement. Armed with all this information, the script for the performance “GEWEENTES/ HABITS” was developed. In this performance, a group of ‘investigators’ attempts to provide the audience with insights into what constitutes the true essence of normality. Whether they succeed in this endeavor, you can judge for yourself on the 21st, 22nd, 27th, and 28th of October at the Kumulus Theatre, located at 89 Herbenusstraat, Maastricht.
